I watched two older movies in the past week.  Here are my thoughts:

Vertigo

Did not like.

I'll admit, it was interesting to watch and Jimmy Stewart was the right amount of crazy-in-love-but-not-in-the-good-way.  Also cool was seeing the area around San Francisco.

The bad stuff was ever present, though.  Firstly, he was in his fifties, while his love interest was in her twenties.  Just, ew.  And what's all this "I love you, but I really don't know anything about you!"  No, that's not how that works.  Lust is based on physical attraction.  Love is based on knowing someone really well.  Those two spent maybe five hours together, lying to one another the whole time, but fell deeply, madly in love.  Bull.

I also had issues with the female lead.  I won't give too much away, but she gets much more interesting in the second half of a very long movie.  But not much more.  She apparently startles easily, too. :-P

Which leads me to that ending!  What?!

*My impression of the ending*:
Main characters: Oh noes!  Were in a physically precarious and dangerous spot as we reveal that nothing is secret any more!
*Enter character not previously introduced nor will ever be explained*
Main character: *dies for no reason*

Interesting movie, but not one of my favorites.

The Third Man

This movie rocked my socks.

I tend to believe that it is easy for legends to grow and for acting to become quickly overrated.  Let me state for the record that Orson Wells is not overrated.  He deserves every word of praise he ever got.  He had one speaking scene, but it's what stands out most for me in the whole movie.

The plot was great.  The hero and heroine were flawed enough to be interesting.  And the love story (similar to Vertigo's I've-known-you-for-five-minutes-let's-get-married), while stagy enough, doesn't have the classic smarmy ending.  In fact, it goes the exact opposite route, which was the cherry on top of this film sundae.

I completely recommend this movie.
