I'm probably about to "protest too much," but I really, really couldn't care about Britney Spears less.
Until recently.
Way back when she came out with her first albums, I was too old to be into her music. Too much bubble gum pop for me. Too much of a girl trying to skirt around honest-to-goodness sexuality, winking while she did, yet taking herself so damn serious. Shut up. I had Alanis Morrisette for my teen years. Thank goodness.
When she married a friend in Vegas, only to divorce/annul the next day, I snickered.
When she married Mr. Federline, I winced and did my best to ignore the whole train wreck I knew it would turn into. When they divorced, I was relieved because I figured the worst was over, and could go back to unconsciously ignoring her and her music that does nothing for me.
But then the train wreck got worse! When I come across "news" articles with her name in the headline, I can't help it, I click on it.
This leaves me to my own debate:
Britney Spears: Screwed up starlet or MEDIA GENIUS?
I'm beginning to lean towards media genius. Really. I have a sneaking suspicion that she knows, understands, and can reap the benefits the full impact of schadenfreude. She knows the American public loves to see a new star get created, see the star fall and fall grotesquely, see them struggle, and rejoice in a glorious comeback. She'll clean up when she finally gets her act together. Millions in the bank for being a fraction as good as she started out.
I don't like her music, but she's really entertaining.
