Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron's record last night.*

Whoopie.*

I watched a program on HBO that interviewed the man who first made the Clear, the steroid that is undetectable on urine tests that many players in a lot of different sports use to get better.  He said that it not only improved strength, it made eye-hand coordination better, increased reaction time, and put players in "the Zone."  In other words, besides giving players a way to build extra muscle, it is making them better players overall, but in an artificial way.  So to all of the steroid apologists and naysayers who say that steroids don't help players hit the ball, you're wrong and shut up.

I know that we live in more technologically advanced world now than we did.  One of the outcomes is steroids that players use to have an advantage over other players.  But in my opinion, steroids are only a more advanced way to cheat.

I like baseball.  I don't follow it with regularity and my favorite team hasn't won a World Series since 1908, so I don't have much ground to make any learned recommendations or statements about the sport.  But I do like the sport and get caught up in the hoopla when someone does something extraordinary.

So excuse me if I treat the breaking of Hank Aaron's record* with a bored "ho hum."  Hank Aaron was a true athlete.  More than that, he was a true hero.  He battled the racism and segregation of the 1950's and still managed to set the record.  And he did it without drugs.  It's disgusting that he has been "eclipsed" by a man who doesn't deserve it.

*I'm waiting for the day that the sports pages don't make me shake my head with disgust.
