Tardiness will not be tolerated!

starzkiI had over 5 students come in late to class today.
After the last one came in over 15 minutes late, I nearly blew my top. I had to take several calming breaths before I said something that I regretted.
It was just very disruptive. While I do teach from notes that I have in front of me, most of my lecture is improvisational. I come up with my examples on the spot and try several different ways of explaining something before I move on with the lecture. Having to watch students step over one another and arrange themselves at their desks then furiously write notes from the board to keep up is incredibly distracting.
And this happened five times today.
The last time, I just stopped teaching and straightened my notes and my papers at the podium while Ms. Tardypants got settled. There were several moments of uncomfortable silence and some of the other students even started giggling to break the tension.
I guess I just don't know how to handle being angry at my students yet. I usually adore my students. And this is a good group. I think I still identify with being a student too much to come down hard on them, but lines do need to be drawn on acceptable behavior.
