The book I wrote about wanting to read way back in May?  Finally bought it last weekend and just finished it about 10 minutes ago.

The book is Mysterious Skin by Scott Heim.

The book was...sad.  I can't think of a better descriptor for me.

It was a lot like reading Lolita in that it was a well-written book about pedophilia.  I can appreciate both books as lovely works of art, but still be disturbed by their content.  While Nabokov tended towards flowery language and descriptions, Heim was more stark and in-your-face.  I think that's what made me so sad when Lolita just made me marvel at the writing, Mysterious Skin felt like I was really reading someone's (or someones' as it's written) diary.  I didn't for a second doubt that kids, maybe not every kid, but kids with specific backgrounds in the situation the kids in the story were in, would say/feel/react the exact same way if the situation was real.

Now to drown my sorrows.
