I've loved Melissa from the moment that I first saw her on Full Metal Panic! She is so awesome, kick ass, funny, and doesn't take shit from anyone. It would be really hard not to like her.
But I have a confession: In addition to just loving her character, I actually feel a connection to her. This is mostly because I knew Melissa when I was in college. It, of course, is not the same Melissa, but I did know a Melissa who was Asian and came from a military background. She was funny and kick ass, too, but way goofier than Melissa Mao. But there were enough similarities that I could just feel how Mao would relate to those around her when she was in her late teens (which would be about the time she went to basic training for the Marines).
This started a whole head canon for her in basic, which is how I came up with Celina. I knew "my" Melissa mostly through soccer. I've played soccer most of my life. In college, it was how I met all of the people who would become my friends. And our camaraderie was terrific. There wasn't the jealous backbiting, love triangles, or catfights that you often see in women's relationships in the media. We were just honest-to-goodness friends. And I was sure that that was something Melissa Mao would have had in basic training.
So a lot of the interaction I have for Melissa Mao and Celina is based on friendships I've seen and been a part of as a soccer player. There was always a lot of fun and teasing, but we never failed to be there for one another when it was needed. Therefore, I have extensive head canon for their time in basic and after, which kind of bleeds through into my stories. I wanted there to be a non-cliche female relationship for Melissa, so I gave her one. And Celina has all of Mel's dirty secrets. ;-)
And yes, "my" Melissa's nickname was Melly. Or Meli (as she spelled it). It was also Mel. And Smell. And Smelly. So when I think of Melissa Mao, I just had to think that somewhere out there she has a friend with enough balls to have given her the nickname "Smelly" and actually use it to her face. And I'm sure Kurz would want to know about it!
And now I'm done with the Summer Mini Challenge. I think I may have to do another. Woot!
