Notes: I said in my author's notes that this is my favorite scene in the FMP anime series. This is true. It's also my favorite scene from any anime series. I could be my favorite scene of anything ever.
I just love it.
The scene directly previous to this one had been heartbreaking. Sousuke was the sole survivor (or so it appeared) of a battle over a nuclear warhead. His comrades were all killed. His enemies were dead. He had faced an opponent that he had considered as close as a brother when they were young and had been forced to kill him. All that is left is that warhead and Sousuke drags it with him as he walks back alone. Depressing!
But in the very next scene, he's back at his apartment in Japan and he sees that Kaname has been there waiting for him. She's sleeping on his doorstep and has souvenirs for him from her recent time at the beach. He just sits next to her and then the scene (and the story arc) ends. There are less than ten words spoken the whole scene, but it is just stuffed with emotion.
Sousuke had thought he was alone. He had thought that there probably wasn't anyone waiting for him "at home" in Japan. But he's coming to the realization that he has Kaname. She's there for him, had missed him, and I see this as a major turning point in their relationship. Both are too tired to do the wrong thing to screw this moment up. She's to sleepy to bluster with embarrassment and he's too exhausted to do or say something to offend her. They're not getting in their own way when it comes to the other and it's really a terrific moment for us Sousuke/Kaname shippers.
So I took the moment and imagined how Sousuke must be feeling. And added a little wishful thinking in having her stay the night (non-romantically) with him.
Like I said, I just love this scene and I hope I've done it some justice.
