Notes:  I actually sat down to write my story for the "smile" prompt today.  It's been banging around in my head for weeks now and I thought I'd finally get to purge it.  But when I started writing, I was feeling more like I could do some justice to Kaname's voice today, so I just went with it.

This is more the drabble length I was shooting for in this challenge.  I do think that the smile prompt will be long (though I'm trying to edit it in my head already), so I'm happy that I didn't go on and on with this prompt.

As I said in my author's notes in the story, I think I might have made Kaname a tad to insightful about her feelings and actions.  But she is a smart girl who knows what to say and how to act (for the most part) so that she was able to become popular in her school.  So I figure there has to be some awareness there.

Also, I've been doing reading and remembering what it was like to be a teenaged girl.  It was tough!  You weren't, as a girl, allowed to say something like, "I find you really attractive and I would like X, Y, or Z."  At least I felt I couldn't.  It wasn't "proper" and I didn't want anyone to think I was slutty if I ever spoke my mind to a boy.  You had to be verbally wishy-washy, but hope that your other signals would show the person you liked that you wanted to date, to kiss, to whatever.  It always seemed important to have that plausible deniability so that you weren't so harshly labeled.

Kaname is a little shy with her true (non-violent) feelings toward Sousuke.  I think part of it has to do with how hard she worked to become liked and popular within her school.  Part of it is just not wanting to be vulnerable.  And part of it might be that she's not totally sure what exactly her feelings toward him are.

The problem is that Sousuke is too literal.  Despite all other evidence to the contrary, he'll always take what Kaname says at face value.  This has to be so frustrating for Kaname.  So that's why I wrote the little drabble I did.  And now my author's notes here far exceed the number of words used in the actual drabble.

So I'll be quiet now.  :)
