Notes: Well, I've made my first attempt at a Kurz Weber/Melissa Mao fic. I'm still not quite sure how I feel about it.
I never really shipped them, even as I watched the anime, because I had a hard time liking Kurz. But then I read some of the stories by unkeptsecret and realized that there was a lot more to Kurz that I wasn't giving him credit for. He's actually a really good guy underneath his narcissism and big talk. And he really does have feelings for Melissa. I can totally respect that.
Furthermore, I just don't think I could have made the prompt "summer fling" work for the Sousuke/Kaname relationship. They're both way too inexperienced with love, dating, and relationships to really even consider a summer fling with anyone.
As for the story, itself, I'm not completely happy with it. The tone and perspective is too detached. Part of me wishes I had chosen one perspective and stuck with it. Or switched perspectives as the timeline moved along. I kind of made a stab at the latter, but I guess I don't feel confident in writing from either Melissa's or Kurz's point of view to really just dive into it. So I took the more cautious approach and told the story in a way that made me feel most comfortable. I'm not disappointed in it, I feel I told the story that I wanted to tell, it's just that I wish it didn't seem so impersonal.
Story-wise, there was also the huge hurdle of my outstanding ignorance in all things military to deal with. Hopefully I hand-waved enough detail that it's not completely noticeable. Major thanks toscribefigaro for giving me some vocabulary so I wasn't writing something like, "They went to the thing to do the thing."
So, yeah. My first Weber/Mao. At least I tried? :P
