starzkiI went a little more obscure with today's meme response.
Day 23 - A crazy love triangle/quadrangle that worked out great?
A couple of years ago when I was trolling for some anime to watch, I came across a weird little series called Super GALS. The animation was too stylized, bright, and busy. The main characters were 15 year old girls who liked fashion and rule the streets of Shibuya, Tokyo. I had almost nothing to identify with in this series at all.
But I was still thoroughly entertained by it.
My main ship on the show was Aya/Rei (a weird departure for me as Aya is the quiet, clumsy one, rather than the kick-ass one), but this question asked about the crazy love triangle that worked out.
I think that the Yuya/Ran/Tatsuki triangle is a great way to show how love can work itself out.
Ran (top) is the #1 head gal of Shibuya. She's who most people turn to in order to see the fashion and what's in style. She brings the party. She is the party. And she rules the streets of Shibuya with an iron fist and an eye towards justice (she comes from a long line of police officers). She loves goofing off and is a bit of a bubblehead when it comes to school. She's cute and lots of boys take notice, though she's shy of showing "lovey-dovey" expression.
Yuya (left) is the best friend of the guy voted the #1 coolest guy in the area, Rei. Yuya came in second with voters and Ran often not-so-nicely calls him "Second Place." Yuya is head over heels for Ran and does everything except stand on his head to get her attention. (Actually he probably has stood on his head for her, I'm just not remembering when it happened.)
Ran is completely oblivious.
Then, along comes Tatsuki (right). He's almost a male version of Ran. He's a complete bubblehead, loves to party, is the reigning parapara king of his old town, and is super laid-back and confident. He likes Ran. Ran immediately likes him back and announces that he's her boyfriend. (She's bossy like that.)
Yuya is crushed and makes it his mission to show Ran that he's the better man.
In multiple attempts of going head-to-head with Tatsuki (or in larger races and competitions), Yuya always comes in "second place" due to Tatsuki's skill and, often, dumb luck.
Yuya never wins, but Tatsuki just adores him and refers to him as his "brother" for the rest of the series. Ran really never notices Yuya's crush.
But, this has a happy ending. For as Yuya is always #2 to someone, there is a gal who is always #2 to Ran. Her name is Mami Honda.
Though she's presented as a conniving bitch during the first part of the series, the writers soften her up and present her as a love interest for Yuya. She's every bit the forceful personality that Ran is and it's not long before Mami has declared Yuya her boyfriend. They seem to eventually get to really like one another, and that's good enough for me.
It's always nice when everyone finds love at the end. :)
