starzkiAnother day, another chance to participate in this awesome meme. Today's question was easy.
Day 18 - What is the cutest pairing?
To answer this question, all you have to do is look at these faces:
It cannot be denied that the cutest pairing is Alphonse/Mei of Fullmetal Alchemist.
I loved Mei from the start (yet again confirming my preference for kick-ass females). She's adorable, can hold her own in a fight, and isn't afraid to speak her mind. I also loved that she burst onto the FMA scene fully ready to fall in love with Edward, who she imagined as a tall, gallant alchemist.
Instead, what she got was pure Edward Elric: loud, defensive about his height, argumentative, and rude. Ed is hard for anyone to take for very long. I swear, Winry deserves a medal for being able to handle him.
Anyway, Mei is disappointed that, in reality, Edward is not nearly so crush-worthy.
As Mei works with the Elric brothers, she's dubious about Alphonse, too. She worries that he'll be as bad as Edward. Al informs her that he is the more polite, nicer brother, and his personality is nothing like Ed's.
Mei has an instant crush.
Al is cute. Mei is cute. On aesthetics alone, this pairing would be anyone's "cutest couple."
But there is so much more between them. As Al tries to learn Mei's alkahestry, they begin to build a healthy respect of one another's abilities. Al sees what a cute little spitfire she is and Mei sees that he wasn't lying about being more polite and nicer than Ed.
They build a genuine friendship that leaves open the possibility to grow into something more in the future.
At the end of the series, when all seems lost, Mei is ready to believe it when Al says he has to essentially die in order to live again. She trusts him enough to help him go, though she's devastated when he's gone. It was a spectacularly sweet moment.
And she was right to trust him. Though she had to return to Xing, Al kept his word about traveling to see her in order to properly learn alkahestry. And, it seems, romance did blossom between them.
Just... Awwwwwwwww.
This is why Alphonse/Mei is my pick for cutest pairing.
