I've been playing around with my account and am really starting to like it.  I found an Azumanga Daioh moodtheme!  Huzzah!

Not much else going on with me, though.  Still waiting to hear back from a bunch of colleges and thinking about applying to more.

So, then, onward to the 30 Days of Shipping Meme!

Day 02 - What was your first ship?

Growing up, the Little House on the Prairie books were popular with my friends and age group.  I was an early reader, and a good reader, so I pretty much devoured the whole series in less than two years (which is pretty good for a 9/10 year old).  Therefore, my first real ship was Laura Ingalls/Almanzo Wilder:

For those who may not know, Laura Ingalls Wilder was an author of a series of books that described her life in the mid-to-late 19th century America as a part of a pioneer family.  She lived in log cabins, she helped with farming, and she became a teacher at a very young age.  In one book in the series (Farmer Boy), she also described farming life of a child named Almanzo Wilder, the man she would one day marry.

Over the course of the last books in the series, Laura described her courtship and eventual marriage to Almanzo.  I was in complete love with this relationship.

For one, I already knew that it would work out.  The books were written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, so I knew that it was safe to root for them.

Also, the books are mainly written for children, so the relationship that was described was particularly chaste and proper.  This was good for me at the time because too much passion would probably have scared me away.  I wasn't familiar with romantic love, though I'd had a few crushes, and I couldn't really imagine a physically loving relationship beyond hand holding and perhaps a light kiss or two, maybe on the mouth, but mostly on the cheek.

Therefore, the courtship of Laura and Almanzo was exactly the thing to curl my toes.  I particularly remember her describing the way she felt as Almanzo helped her down from a carriage, the way he was so gentle when he touched her hand, and the light, airy feeling it gave Laura as he did so.  I think I literally squeed at this description.  I was a total Laura/Almanzo shipper.

I had loved the Little House books because they transported me to a different time and situation where kids played ball with pig bladders and finding a penny at the bottom of a Christmas stocking was like discovering treasure.  It was quaint and interesting.  That Laura Ingalls Wilder was also able to describe falling in love in such a simple, non-threatening way (because, face it, most of the time, love is really scary), I moved away from considering boys as the enemy to entertaining the fact that they could be potential partners in life.

So yes, the Little House books helped me fall in love with reading and introduced me to my first real ship.
