Wanted: Good anime!

So, flist (and anyone who stumbles across this post), I am coming to you with a request:  What anime series or movies do you recommend?

I kind of got a bit buzzed on anime this past weekend and I'd like to see some new stuff.  My only request is that it be really good or entertaining in some way.

I'm really not going to put on any restrictions.  I would have thought I really disliked mecha anime, for example, but Full Metal Panic totally owns my soul.  Obviously, I like Inuyasha and Bleach is fun, but too long for me to maintain.

The assorted works of Miyazaki

Basically, I need interesting and likable characters (which is why I hate Death Note with a fiery passion).  If there's a good ship to moon over, I'm all over that, too.  I'm into silly and funny as much as I like major angst.  All I want is for it to be compelling, you know?

So, any suggestions?
