I guess they're tolerating me.
Jul. 6th, 2006 12:23 pmThe student who complained to me about my being too sarcastic just emailed me with, "OMG, I luv you."
Progress.
Yes, it was in response to me saying there would be no quiz today. But I was also quick to point out that the quiz wasn't canceled, it was just moved because of the holiday. But, again, progress.
Also, I had a friend of mine come and guest lecture for me for a half hour in class today. It was to give me a little break from having to talk for 2 1/2 hours, to give the class a break from having to listen to me for hours, and to get someone else's technique in the teaching of stats. This friend of mine loves, loves stats and is a great public speaker so it was fun and entertaining for me to see. But at 8 AM, he just seemed like he was too much of a morning person to the rest of the class, all boisterous and excited about probability's multiplication rule.
When I got up after he left, I made the comment, "I just thought you might enjoy a little break from me..."
There were a few very loud, vocal No's. Awesome.
I doubt they love me as a teacher. I doubt they even slightly like me. But I think they're beginning to appreciate that I'm kind of low-key and honest.
I've stopped pretending that I enjoy being in that class at that time. I'm functional in the early morning hours, I'm just usually not happy about it. So I'm less dynamic and rarely put students on the spot for answers that I know they haven't even begun reading. Which they seem to appreciate.
My early morning teaching style is:
1) Introduce live horse to an audience of confused faces.
2) Proceed to beat the horse into a bloody, dead mess.
3) Point at horse and explain how it died.
4) Continue to beat dead horse with a slightly different club.
5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 until class understands or becomes too frustrated to listen to that particular topic any longer.
This is exactly how this class feels to me. But I only have to actually get up an lecture 2 more times.
YAY!
