My thoughts entertain me.
Jul. 1st, 2006 12:09 amYesterday I was walking my dog through the alley behind my apartment. There was a mattress that someone had thrown out and left next to a dumpster. A homeless person had found the mattress and decided to curl up and take a nap on it.
Yes, I know that homelessness is a tragedy and that human beings who have lost control of their lives to the extent that they can't manage their basic needs should never be taken lightly, but the situation just tickled me.
I laughed for nearly a block just going over this person's thought process. I could just see it:
Hum de hum. It's a beautiful day. Nice and sunny. But, man, am I tired. The sun is making my mind all muzzy and I can barely keep my eyes open. *yawn* And I didn't sleep well last night, what with the panhandling and searching for decent shelter. I sure could go for a nap. Oh hey! A mattress that no one is using! How fortuitous! *Sgggnnnzzzzzzz*
Awesome.
I talked to my dad a little bit after and was still finding the whole situation way too entertaining, so I told him about it. My dad is uncomfortable with the thought that homeless people prowl the streets of my neighborhood. So he couldn't stop himself from asking, "Are you sure he was homeless?"
This was even better!
Hum de hum. It's a beautiful day. Nice and sunny. But, man, am I tired. What a bummer that I have to be carrying this mattress through these dirty city alleys. Hey, I've got an idea... *Sgggnnnzzzzzzz*
And my Dad calls me naive.
