So this morning I'm on the bus reading the copy of Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture magazine that I snagged from my department's grad student lounge (it's awesome and entertaining and really informative) when I come across an article that was nestled snugly between "Bring Me the Head of Danny Bonaduce: Cultural Complicity in Celebrity Narcissism" and "Everything You Wanted to Know About Feminism But Were Too Afraid to Ask."  That article?  "Me, Myself, & I: Fan Fiction and the Art of Self-Insertion."  My eyes bulged and my immediate thought was, "But I've been so careful about hiding that I'm a fanfic writer!  How do they know?  Who knows?  Who knows?"

It was actually a pretty good article about the proliferation of Mary Sues in fan fiction and how they signify the (generally bad) writer's ideal self.  Anime fan fiction was not brought up, but the fact that I was reading about fan fiction without having actively looked for it was just too surreal.  It would be kind of like having someone you've known for a while who you didn't think know your online alias suddenly come up and call you by your pen name.  I'm a little thrown.

But the fact that fan fiction is on Bitch's radar at all has me all that much closer to buying a subscription.
