Today, I might be controversial (especially in some circles).

Day 28 - A pairing that you'll never understand?

I believe that the reason that I don't understand this couple might come down to timing, but a pairing that I'll never understand is Buffy/Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  I just... can't.



Like I said, it might come down to timing.

I started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer the first day it premiered.  I loved the first episode, but knew that it would be one of those shows that I would obsess over.  I actually resisted watching it after that.  I knew the characters and would often hear about some of the plot points from different sources.  I knew I eventually wanted to watch it, but I just needed some time.

Then, I went to graduate school.  I had less time in classes, but more time on my own.  And, as luck would have it, the channel FX started playing Buffy the Vampire Slayer from episode 1.  At the same time, season 6 (the most awful season of all of them, IMO) had just started playing during its regular run.

Therefore, I was watching Buffy falling in love with Angel, having to fight off a truly, awesomely vile Spike in the first seasons at the same time I was watching Buffy's depressed, masochistic quasi-"relationship" with Spike occurring.  Every day I'd watch a cheerful Slayer do what she could to kick Spike's ass, and once a week I'd watch a mopey Slayer have an unhealthy sexual relationship with Spike.

I liked Buffy better in the earlier seasons and associated her depression with Spike.  Intellectually, I know this isn't the case.  Buffy was having problems and the one person she thought she could turn to was Spike.  However, she was also using him to punish herself for being angry at her friends who were really trying to do the right thing by bringing her back from the dead.

Even as I watched their relationship progress past the first seasons to the point where Spike was genuinely in love with Buffy, I still couldn't get the bad taste of season 6 out of my mouth.  It just seemed so wrong.

Part of me appreciated, in season 7, when Joss Whedon tried to redeem Spike a bit and make his relationship with Buffy something that was beneficial, rather than harmful.  But I still had my guard up when it came to the two of them together and it's just something that I'll never be able to accept or understand.

There you go.  I said it.  I'll never understand Buffy/Spike.
