Another hard day in the shipping meme

Day 17 - A pairing you never thought would work out, but did?
Like I said in the title, today's was really difficult.
It's not even that I have OTPs that don't go through struggles and break-ups and points where it doesn't look like they're ever going to get back together. It's that I'm enough of a romantic to believe that they're still going to work out.
Heck, I'd have a dozen or so answers if this question was, "A pairing that you thought for sure would work, but didn't." And I would thank mainly Joss Whedon for splitting up my favorite couples, often in terrible, gruesome ways. But I digress.
I actually only came up with what could be a good answer to this question last night, and I've had weeks to think about it. Tough, tough question. But here goes:
A pairing that I never thought would work out, but did is Lorelai/Luke from Gilmore Girls.
I will admit that my watching of Gilmore Girls was sporadic at best. I would catch a show here and there, I knew the characters and the main plot lines, but I never really consistently tuned in. But then the show went into syndication and I could watch the shows I missed. I was invested enough in this show to start shipping characters.
And Lorelai was tough customer to ship. I tended to like all of her boyfriends. She seemed to have eyes for Luke whenever she was single (and vice versa).
But then he got married. And then she got another boyfriend. Etc. There were always obstacles to them growing a romantic relationship with one another.
Until there wasn't. Luke and Lorelai made a real effort to have a romance. It was nice.
Also, it was not-so-nice. They had their issues. They fought. They broke up.
I seriously thought the ship had sunk when Lorelai went back to Christopher (her daughter's father) after the break-up and impulsively married him. It just seemed to spell the end of Lorelai/Luke to me.
It wasn't. Lorelai/Luke shippers had to wait until the last seconds of the season finale, but we finally got our happy ending.
I was actually surprised it worked out like it did.
So yay!

Day 12 - Who had the best wedding? Xander and Anya from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Day 13 - What is your favorite television pairing? Mulder/Scully from the X-Files.
Day 14 - What is your favorite book pairing? Elizabeth Bennett/Mr. Darcy of Pride & Prejudice.
