So today is day 7 of the meme.  I've been doing this for a week now and it's still hella-fun.  I'm running in to the point in this meme where there's going to be a lot of overlap of fandoms that I've already talked about, but oh well.  I calls 'em like I sees 'em.

I've been looking forward to talking about today's question since I saw [livejournal.com profile] luxken27 do it and decided I wanted to do this meme, too.  I love angst and heartbreak, so this was a fun question for me to answer.  And, boy, did I answer it.

And I'm cheating again with today's question:

Day 07 - The  most heartbreaking scene?

I picked two scenes from two different animes.  I have reasons for this:

First of all, when I first saw this question, one scene immediately popped into my mind.  I had seen it recently and the whole scene was raw and touching.  It's the scene in Fullmetal Alchemist, episode 19, where Hawkeye thinks that Mustang has been killed by Lust.

Hawkeye gets angry, then despairs, then is ready to give up her life.

It's a well done, gorgeous scene that really shows how much Hawkeye really feels for Mustang.  The thought of him being gone from her life for good makes her have a complete meltdown.  But never fear, Mustang shows up before Lust can kill Hawkeye.

And he looks super smexy while doing it, too.  Whoo boy!

The scene is quite hearbreaking, but only for a while.  Everyone in it ends up all right in the end.  So while I love this Fullmetal Alchemist scene and wanted to share it, I think that a scene in Full Metal Panic shows hearbreak in a different way.

I'm afraid I couldn't find a youtube video that allowed embedding with the whole scene, so I'll have to make you work for it just a little, but bear with me as I set up the scene.

Sousuke lived in Afghanistan from the approximate ages 6 to 12 (after leaving the Russian orphanage where he was trained to be a mercenary), further learning to become an assassin and mecha pilot.  His best friend and fellow mercenary-in-training during this time was Zaid (Za eed), who was one of the only people in his life to ever show him kindness and friendship without strings attached.

Fast-forward five years and it's summertime in Japan.  Kaname and her friends are taking the break and going to the beach to do "normal" teenager things.  However, since Sousuke is the only one who can pilot a specific mecha, he's called away from body guarding Kaname to go back to Afghanistan to protect a nuclear warhead from being stolen by the bad guys.

In Afghanistan, Sousuke has to work with a group of soldiers who mostly resent his being there, but who also grow to respect him after they see him in action.  His mortal enemy (Gauron) shows up to steal the warhead.  Gauron has also hired Zaid to help him take it from Sousuke's team.

What ensues, basically, is a bloodbath.  Sousuke's team is killed one-by-one by Gauron and Zaid.  Sousuke is the lone survivor and, in the end, he must kill Zaid.  He walks away, alone, carrying the warhead to where it's to be delivered.

The scene was crushing, and it just kept going.

The next we see is Sousuke coming back to his apartment in Japan.  Kaname is asleep on his doorstep, waiting for him so that she can give him his souvenir from the beach.  As an audience member who knows about Kaname's personality, we're almost expecting her to wake up enraged and concerned that she's been kept waiting.  This would have been, I think, too much for Sousuke after the devastation he just witnessed.

But it's not what happens.  Instead, Kaname goes on dozing and Sousuke goes to sit down next to her.  She just quietly puts her head on his shoulder.  It seems to be exactly what Sousuke needs because when she sleepily asks him to say something, he comes back quietly with his signature, "It's not a problem" answer.

While he's obviously exhausted and reeling from his recent experiences, Kaname was able to give him at least a little support and a reminder that he still has dear friends in his life.  To me, this scene was all about "coming home."  He's going to try and leave the battle and the loss behind, and he just might be able to do that with Kaname by his side.  This is absolutely one of my favorite scenes, not just in anime, but in all media.  It says so much while being so underplayed.  It's heavy with heartbreak but the possibility of hope and love that it's stayed with me from the first time I saw it.

The scene (though truncated) is here.  I apologize for the AMV with mecha battles ahead of it, but it was the only place I could find the scene in a youtube video that would let me embed.  If you skip to the 7:15 mark, you can see what I'm talking about.

If you want to see the whole scene (hell, it's the whole episode), you can find it here.  If you skip to the 16:30 mark, you can see the whole scene, not just the tail end.

And, *phew* I think I'm done with this meme for today!
