I had the ultrasound yesterday.


It was weird.  But I got to see how the valves in my heart were working, which was odd, but cool.  I think almost everything looked okay just from where I was laying, but the doctor will be calling me by the end of the day tomorrow if there's any abnormalities.

What was really concerning is that they did a "bubble test" to check to see if there was a hole in my heart (between the atria).  So the tech was all, "A nurse is going to come in and start an IV and then well inject agitated saline with bubbles into your vein that will show up in your heart."

I may not know a whole lot about medicine, but I'm pretty darn sure that bubbles in the bloodstream were a no-no.  But it was all on the up-and-up and they did the procedure.  The tech even replayed the moment on the monitor where the bubbles went through my heart.  It was kind of neat.  The weirdest part about it was feeling the bubbles go up my arm.  It sounded like a coffee pot at the end of the brewing cycle.

I'm going to assume everything is all right.  I'm not worried about the results.

Day 13 - What is your favorite television pairing?

This one was easy.  And it's a repeat from before.

My favorite television pairing is Mulder/Scully from the X-Files.  No question.



There are times when I think that this pairing saved my life.  Dramatic, I know, but I don't think I would be the same person without them.

As I said before, I started watching this show from the first episode as a freshman in high school.  As I also said before, I wasn't popular and I didn't have many friends.  We had moved to Texas from upstate New York (where I had a ton of friends) with the expectation of moving back to New York within two years.  So I didn't really try to make friends.  Joke was on me, though, because my parents still live in that house we moved into.

So, after a year-and-a-half of being friendless and really depressed about living in Texas, I sat down to The X-Files and promptly fell in love with the pairing.  I loved that the show was creepy.  I loved being scared, but still somehow uplifted by the stories.  It was a strange little show and I was convinced they were going to cancel it because it didn't do so well in the ratings.  I remember turning to the tv listings in the paper every Sunday (this was before I knew how to Internet) to make sure the show was on the following Friday and being ecstatic when I saw it there.

I felt like I understood Mulder and Scully.  I was also an outsider and I understood their frustration when no one listened to them.  After every episode, I would seriously dissect the dialog and plot for the next couple of days (I would often tape the shows to rewatch again and again).  Then I would come up with new scenarios for them to do.  This was my first, unwritten, fanfic-ing.  Without this show, I would have been dwelling on my misery.  Instead, I buried myself in loving this show and these characters.  I don't know what would have happened if I didn't have this outlet at this time in my life.

I eventually made a few friends in high school and when I went to college, I really found out who I was and that I was actually pretty cool.  Nerdy, but cool.  I made more friends and had the best time.  But I remained steadfastly a huge X-Files fan.

What kept me coming back every week was the dynamic between Mulder and Scully.  They trusted one another with everything.  Even in the early seasons, they loved one another.  They weren't yet lovers, but their love and fidelity is what kept them going when things got hard.  There are so many gorgeous scenes that showed their feelings that I rarely walked away from an episode feeling disappointed or not knowing in the depths of my shipper heart that they didn't belong together.
